Edinson Cavani has again been left out of the Paris Saint-Germain squad for Wednesday's Coupe de la Ligue quarter-final against Amiens SC at the Stade de la Licorne.

Amiens SC  -  Paris Saint-Germain

Cavani was not involved in Sunday's 6-1 demolition of Stade Rennais FC in the round of 64 of the Coupe de France after a later than expected return to Paris from a winter break in his native South America. And PSG coach Unai Emery has again opted to do without his leading scorer, who has 25 goals in all competitions this season.

Javier Pastore, who only returned to training after the winter break on Monday, is also missing from the squad as PSG look to stay on course to win the Coupe de la Ligue for the fifth season running and secure a berth in the semi-finals.

As well as those two, there is no Thiago Motta after the veteran midfielder came off with a calf injury not long after appearing as a substitute in Rennes at the weekend, although the injury is not thought to be as serious as first feared. Layvin Kurzawa and Marquinhos return after illness and a knee injury respectively.

"We played really well against Rennes and we need to repeat that level of performance and approach a level of excellence," said Emery, who saw Kylian Mbappé, Neymar and Ángel Di María all score twice in Brittany in the first of what will be eight matches in January alone, provided they win in Amiens.

"A season is very long. We have only just started the second half of this campaign and I hope we will have a lot of matches to play between now and the end of May. We are going to need all our players and the competition for places will bring out the best in each one."

The capital club have won 34 consecutive domestic cup ties since their last defeat, a 2-1 home reverse to Montpellier Hérault SC in the Coupe de France round of 32 in January 2014. It would be a huge shock if that run ended in Picardy against an Amiens side who are coming off a wounding 6-0 loss at Ligue 2 outfit FC Sochaux-Montbéliard in the Coupe de France on Sunday.

'Guts' needed

While coach Christophe Pélissier wants his players to bounce back from that setback, he does not hide that the most important game for his side is the weekend trip to OGC Nice on their return to Ligue 1 Conforama duty, with top-flight survival all that really matters this season.

"It is a real pleasure to play this match. We are hoping for a good reaction and we certainly won't make it easy for them. We will need to show the kind of spirit we displayed against Lyon," said Pélissier, recalling the league game at home to OL a month ago when the visitors needed a last-gasp goal to win 2-1.

Recalling the Sochaux debacle, he added: "My idea is not to skip the Cups altogether, far from it. It is hard to accept. I hope the players are angry about it too. I accept responsibility for the choices I made, which took into account injuries and suspensions and giving minutes to players. The disappointment is collective.

"And if we don't have guts against Paris it could get very nasty."
