Promising young winger Nathanaël Mbuku, the next big thing at Stade de Reims, has extended his contract with his boyhood club through to 2023.

A nice birthday present for Nathanaël Mbuku: two days after celebrating his 18th birthday, the winger from Stade de Reims extended his contract through to 2023. Having appeared 11 times (three starts) in Ligue 1 Conforama this season, the young left-sided winger will be switching from the No33 to the No21 jersey.

In-demand

Mbuku made his debut in the top flight on 10 August - when Reims won 2-0 in Marseille on the opening day of the season - at the age of 17 years, 4 months and 25 days. This autumn, he shone with Les Bleuets in the U17 World Cup in Brazil, finishing third and taking home the silver boot with five goals scored in six games, including a hat-trick against Australia.

This contract extension was greeted with great satisfaction by President Jean-Pierre Caillot, convinced of the great potential of his young player.

Caillot: 'Lucid and ambitious'

"The emergence of Nathanaël at the highest level illustrates the growth of the Stade de Reims youth academy. While this signing is a continuation of the career path of a player who has performed at youth level and in France's youth teams, it was achieved in an extremely competitive context," explained the Reims honcho. "Nathanaël attracted a lot of attention, particularly from abroad, as did many of his team-mates in the French U17 team. This extension shows that this young player, in whom we have a lot of faith, has made a lucid and ambitious choice."
