AS Monaco's Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas has stepped in with financial aid to help retirement home residents in Catalonia make it through the coronavirus pandemic.

The serious health crisis affecting the whole world is worrying everyone, but some sections of the population - like the elderly, who have been identified as particularly vulnerable to the virus - more than others.

Unfortunately, many cases of infection and death have cropped up in retirement homes in the last few weeks, and the AS Monaco midfielder has decided to step in to help in one particular case - an affected establishment in his more region of Catalonia.

Helping hand

The 2010 World Cup winner has come to the rescue of the Verge del Remei retirement home in Arenys de Munt (a small municipality in Catalonia) by donating funds help 15 elderly people from that establishment to stay at the home where 13 of the total 32 residents tested positive for the coronavirus.

The director of the establishment had made a call for help to keep the home - in financial difficulty after more than a third of its residents were struck by the virus - open and prevent the rest of the residents from the further exposure to the virus that would be inevitable if the home were forced to shut.
