Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos has won Olympic gold with Brazil at the Rio Games after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Germany in the final.

The gold-medal match at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes and extra time, with Neymar's brilliant free-kick putting Brazil ahead in the first half only for Germany captain Maximilian Meyer to equalise after the break.

However, Brazil triumphed 5-4 in the shoot-out, with Neymar scoring the winning kick to spark jubilant scenes. Marquinhos, who started the game, had scored his penalty, with Nils Petersen crucially missing Germany's last penalty.

The 22-year-old PSG stopper, who had scored in Brazil's 6-0 destruction of Honduras in the semi-finals, will return to France as an Olympic champion but is unlikely to feature for his club until after the international break at the start of next month.
