Montpellier Hérault SC midfielder Junior Sambia is now breathing on his own without the help of a ventilator after suffering complications due to coronavirus.

Sambia, 23, was the first Ligue 1 Conforama player to test positive for coronavirus and was admitted to hospital last Tuesday before being placed in intensive care on Thursday.

The youngster had respected social distancing measures and his agent Frédéric Guerra suspects he picked up the virus whilst shopping. Although still on the road to full recovery, Guerra is upbeat about his client's health.

"He's off the ventilator and although it's going to be a long recovery process, he's no longer in a coma," he told German TV network RTL. "Without a doubt, that's good news. He's breathing by himself and that's very good to hear."

Born in the suburbs of Lyon to parents from the Central African Republic, the hitherto uncapped Sambia has featured in 22 games in all competitions for Montpellier this season, helping La Paillade to eighth in the table.
