Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappé retained his title as top scorer in Ligue 1 Conforama at the end of the 2019-20 season. But what about Wissam Ben Yedder, who also scored 18 Ligue 1 Conforama goals?

Kylian Mbappé, who scored 18 goals in the 2019-20 season, was crowned top scorer in Ligue 1 Conforama for the second season running. This season, the France striker beat out competition from Wissam Ben Yedder (AS Monaco), who also scored 18 goals.

To decide between the two French internationals for the top scorer award in Ligue 1 Conforama, a tie-breaking draw had to be resolved by looking to the rules. The first of the seven guidelines gives the advantage to 'the player who has scored the fewest penalties'. Here, Mbappé's having scored all his goals in open play put him ahead of the Monegasque, who had taken three successful penalties.

This regulation for the scorer's chart has been in place since the 2006-07 Ligue 1 Conforama season.

Mbappé like Giroud in 2012

This is the second time since the rule's inception that it has been used to  separate top scorers with the same goal tally. In 2011-12, Olivier Giroud (Montpellier HSC) was crowned top scorer in the French league (21 goals), ahead of Nenê (PSG), thanks to his having scored just two penalties compared to the Brazilian ace's nine.
