Memphis Depay and Olympique Lyonnais are continuing talks about extending the Netherlands international's contract with the seven-time Ligue 1 champions, the French club's president Jean-Michel Aulas has stated.

Depay was handed the captain's armband by coach Rudi Garcia following Sylvinho's departure early in the 2019-20 season, and had scored nine league goals in just 13 top-flight appearances  before he suffered a campaign-ending knee injury in the 1-0 defeat to Rennes in December.

The ex-PSV Eindhoven prodigy, who has been at Lyon since a move from Manchester United in January 2017, has just a year left on his contract at the Groupama Stadium, but OL are keen to keep him at the club longer.

"His aim was to play the EURO, which was postponed," explained Aulas. "He also really wants to play the Champions League Last 16 second leg against Juventus, which has been rescheduled, and the Coupe de la Ligue BKT final. He's preparing himself to be ready.

"I have always had a direct relationship with him. He has always told me that if we find common ground, he'd be happy to extend his contract."

Depay, 26, has scored 43 goals and registered 33 assists in 102 L1 games for OL and netted six times and recorded four assists in 13 UEFA Champions League appearances for the French outfit.
