Olympique de Marseille centre-half Alvaro Gonzalez cannot wait to make his Champions League debut in 2020-2021 and says the club can be ambitious in the competition.

OM are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2013-2014 and France's only winners of the competition, in 1993, are keen to make a good impression as they return to Europe's top table.

Alvaro enjoyed a fabulous debut season at OM on loan from Villarreal and has now signed a permanent deal with the 2019-2020 Ligue 1 Uber Eats runners-up. The Spaniard told OM's website: "My personal ambitions are the same as the club's: put together good results in the league and qualify for the Champions League again. And we want to go as far as possible in the Champions League."

"We're ambitious"

His European experience so far has been in the Europa League and the 30-year-old is raring to make his Champions League bow: "It's the dream of every player to feature in this competition. I can't wait to make my debut. We're ambitious and we'll do everything in order to make the OM fans happy. We have a competitive squad that is capable of competing on all fronts."

OM's fame extends will beyond the French borders as Alvaro realised when he went home: "When I go back to Spain I see a lot of people with OM shirts. Altogether we're going to try to make the most of a good season."
