With superstar striker Kylian Mbappé out injured for Friday's Coupe de la Ligue BKT Final against OL, we take a look at how Paris Saint-Germain have fared historically with and without their World Cup-winning prodigy…

Kylian Mbappé's right ankle injury - sustained in a horror tackle as PSG beat Saint-Etienne 1-0 to lift a record 13th Coupe de France - is expected to keep him out of action for three weeks. As the capital club looks to take up some big challenges - the Coupe de la Ligue BKT Final on Friday 31 July and the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on 12 August - we take compare how the capital club has fared both with and without the French superstar.

PSG win more without him

Since signing for Paris, Kylian Mbappé has played 121 matches out of a possible 156 in all competitions. Surprisingly enough, PSG have a better winning percentage without him than with him.

Since the summer of 2017, Paris have won 76.9% of their matches with Mbappé playing and 82.3% in his absence, and the same observation holds for draws and defeats. PSG concede more draws with him than without him (11.6% against 8.6%) and lose more with him than without him (11.6% against 8.6%).

However, if we focus on the 2019-20 season, we observe a reverse trend. Out of the 34 games played, PSG won 29 times, or 85.3% of the time. Without him, this figure is slightly lower: 81.8% wins (nine out of 11 games).

European pedigree

But, given the fact that PSG are looking to beat a 25-year Champions League quarter-final hoodoo as they take on the winner of Atlético Madrid and RB Leipzig in the Final 8 in Lisbon on 12 July, how do the capital club's with/without numbers look in Europe's top club competition?

In three seasons with Paris, Kylian Mbappé has played 23 Champions League matches, missing out on just one, so it's difficult to make a meaningful comparison. In these 23 matches, Mbappé has had 14 wins (60.9% of the games), 3 draws (13%) and 6 defeats (26.1%).

The only game he missed? PSG's big win over Real Madrid (3-0) on the opening matchday day of the 2019-20 campaign. Out due to a muscular problem, he was unable to play, as was Neymar, who was suspended, which prompted Thomas Tuchel to line up a 4-3-3 with what turned out to be a very successful Di Maria - Icardi - Sarabia trio up front.

PSG score more with him

Since the summer of 2017, the capital club have scored more with Kylian Mbappe than without him, although the figures are very close. With Mbappe playing, PSG have scored 349 times in 121 games for an average of 2.88 goals per game. Without him, Paris scored 100 times in 35 games, an average of 2.86 goals per game. Conversely, PSG conceded more goals when Mbappé was on the field (0.88 per game) than when he wasn't (0.71).
