Thiago Silva expressed his gratitude and sadness after playing his last match with Paris Saint-Germain - the club he has captained to 23 trophies - on Sunday in the Champions League final.
Emblematic Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva confirmed his departure from the Parisian club when speaking to RMC Sport after the Champions League final loss against Bayern Munich on Sunday evening. He also expressed his sadness after the defeat and thanked the Parisian fans.
"The disappointment is there, we must continue and raise our heads," said the Brazilian, 35, now out of contract after eight seasons with the capital club. "Not everyone makes it to the final. The match was decided on small details. We knew that they would cross to the far post a lot, but still we were punished. Unfortunately for me, it was my last game in Paris. It's even worse for me. This year, things were going very well, except for that game."
Indeed, Paris and Thiago Silva had an incredible season 2019-20, going within one goal of winning every single competition they played in - having already stitched up the Trophée des Champions, Ligue 1 Uber Eats, the Coupe de la Ligue BKT, the Coupe de France and the UEFA Champions League in 2019-20.
It was the fourth time that the Brazilian was involved in PSG's making a clean sweep of domestic silverware, and pushed his total number of trophies won with PSG to a staggering 23, including seven Ligue 1 Uber Eats titles.
Respect
"Thanks to everyone for the support, it has been incredible," he confessed. "Respect is the most important thing and they always showed it with me. I apologize to the fans for the disappointment of the final. The club will progress further and will have the opportunity to win the Champions League again. I hope to be able to come back in the future to do something in Paris. My gratitude to this club is incredible. Thank you to the President and to the Emir for the confidence they showed in me."
'Three or four more years'
So what's next for the classy stopper, who was long considered the best defender in the world?
"I don't know, I still want to play three or four more years," he declared. "I want to prepare myself to play in the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. We'll see how my body reacts."
