Kasper Dolberg hit a brace in Strasbourg to clinch a 2-0 win and send perfect OCG Nice to the top of the table; Memphis Depay outdid him, however, with a hat-trick in OL's 4-1 beating of Dijon while OM got the better of Brest 3-2.

Although the disrupted start to the season meant that Paris Saint-Germain were one again not in action - their clash with RC Lens was pushed back to Thursday, 10 September - but there was plenty of excitement - and goals - as France's top flight swung into action for Round 2 at the weekend.

Dolberg fires but Vieira wants more

Leading the charge was OGC Nice's great Dane Kasper Dolberg, who did all the scoring - first from the spot after Strasbourg Captain Lamine Koné brought down Ligue 1 Uber Eats debutant Eddy Sylvestre in the area (37') and then with a delightful chip after Ibrahima Sissoko inadvertently played him in (59') - to maintain Nice's perfect start to the season and send Les Aiglons top.

"Our goal for tonight's game was to improve our level of play. I thought we were better than against Lens but it's still not enough. To have two wins from two matches is good for our confidence," said coach Patrick Vieira before making it clear he will not be taking it easy on his talented team this season. "But we always want more. I would like the team to play much better but what is important is that we work very hard. But compared to our performance against Lens [R1], we have made positive progress."

Depay day in Lyon

Dolberg, who top-scored for the Côte d'Azur club last season with 11 goals, looks set for another bumper season but he will have plenty of competition in the scoring stakes, as Memphis Depay made clear when he bagged a hat-trick in the opening match of Lyon's Ligue 1 Uber Eats campaign, a 4-1 win at home to Dijon FCO.

The Dutchman may have been relatively quiet in the UEFA Champions League Final 8 as his side made it to the semis, but Depay positively roared back into action against Dijon. He smashed penalties in off the post (39', pen.) and the cross-bar (66', pen.) and forced an own-goal from Wesley Lautoa (45') - directly after conjuring a piece of acrobatic brilliance to beat Alfred Gomis from point-blank range (45').

"For 35 minutes we didn't see Memphis but then he made the difference in the space of 10 minutes thanks to some individual magic," said OL coach Rudi Garcia of the league's top scorer. "Real top players are there to score goals and make goals. It helped us to have Memphis there to make the difference and allow us to go in at half time in front, so we could be more relaxed in the second half. We attacked and defended together as a team, and when we do that we are very difficult to play against."

Thauvin back on track as Classique looms

Like OL, last season's Ligue 1 Uber Eats runner-up Marseille were playing their opening match of the 2020-21 campaign - their Round 1 clash at home to Saint-Etienne was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns - and like OL, André Villas-Boas' men took all three points as they travelled to Brest. Florian Thauvin got the ball rolling with his first goal in an injury-hit 15 months (20') and then provided the assists for Croatian stopper Duje Caleta-Car (26', 80') to clinch a 3-2 win over a Brest side who twice managed to hit back, first through Romain Faivre (45') and then thanks to Gaëtan Charbonnier (89').

"It's a move I'm very familiar with, one I work on every day in training. I was kind of luck, as the shot was lightly deflected, but it's great to score right away for my comeback," said France winger Thauvin, who missed all but 20 minutes of last season with an ankle injury. "It's the longest injury of my career. I've worked hard to make it back, and now I feel good. I don't feel any pain any more."

Which augurs well for OM - who were without stars Dimitri Payet, Alvaro Gonzalez and Bouna Sarr - ahead of the Classique that awaits them in Paris on the other side of the international break.

Hamouma clinical as Bordeaux, Monaco clinch wins

Saint-Etienne's Romain Hamouma was on fire as Les Verts got their season under way with a 2-0 win over Lorient, curling in a left-footed screamer from outside the area (19') before repeating the feat with his right boot later in the piece (51') - both from assists by attacking colleague Arnaud Nordin.

Meanwhile Bordeaux got the first win of the Jean-Louis Gasset era, building on their opening-day draw by putting Angers to the sword 2-0 with goals from Josh Englishman Josh Maja (25') and Toma Basic (27'), while ten-man Monaco claimed the first win under new boss Niko Kovac, defender Benoît Badiashile getting his second of the season (22') for a 1-0 win away to FC Metz and fourth place on the Ligue 1 Uber Eats table - despite Youssouf Fofana's red card (47').

Camavinga on target, Ferhat brings the magic

Like Badiashile, LOSC forward Jonathan Bamba got his second goal in as many games as he fired Les Dogues to a 1-0 win in Reims, while Rennes had burgeoning superstar Eduardo Camavinga to thank for the winner in their 2-1 triumph over Montpellier that saw both side end with ten men.

Nîmes were out to build on their 4-1 opening-day win over Brest but found themselves pegged back by Nantes who - despite seeing both Imran Louza (49') and Fabio (87') sent off - won 2-1 as Andrei Girotto (11') and Louza (27', pen.) cancelled out Zinedine Ferhat's early goal of the season contender (57').
