After three seasons at Lyon, Brazilian defender Fernando Marçal heads to the English Premier League with Wolverhampton.

Olympique Lyonnais' Brazilian defender Fernando Marçal (31) has signed a two-year contract with English club Wolverhampton, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season. His transfer will bring 2 million euros to OL, whose colours he had defended in 75 matches in all competitions since 2017.

Marçal endured some tough times at OL after signing from Benfica in 2017, with his first-team chances blocked by left-back Ferland Mendy, but once Mendy left for Real Madrid and coach Rudi Garcia included Marçal in a three-man defensive set-up, alongside Marcelo and Jason Denayer, things took an uptick for the Brazilian.

Best for last

Although Garcia's arrival to replace Sylvinho in the OL dugout in October 2019 came too late to get the club over their disastrous start to the 2019-20 Ligue 1 Uber Eats campaign, it did see the club thrive in Europe and Marcal played a key role in the run to the Champions League semi-final, starting in both last-16 legs against Juventus and as well as against Manchester City and Bayern Munich at the Final 8 in Lisbon.
