Coronavirus-hit Monaco coach Niko Kovac has revealed he's recovering well and told the German press he's ready to trim the principality club's squad.

A week on from testing positive for coronavirus, Kovac told Bild: "I'm doing well and I feel good. I've got no symptoms but as I am in quarantine the work is being done by my brother Robert and the assistants. We decide together what the contents of training will be and they are filmed in full and that allows me to watch them from my hotel room."

The former Bayern Munich coach added: "A lot of money has been spent here and we can't keep shopping like that. We need to reduce the number of players. We're not swimming in money. In recent years we've not been playing in Europe and we're missing the revenue from that."

Defensive improvement target

Monaco shipped 44 goals in 28 Ligue 1 Uber Eats games last season but kept a clean sheet in winning 1-0 at Metz in only Kovac's second game in charge. Improving a defence that was the fourth-worst in the top division last season is one of the Croat's main ambitions.

"We brought in Axel Disasi from Reims for the defence. The first step was to make the defence more secure. We also want to play in an attractive way and attack. We need to restructure the team and that takes time. We know that during this period we also need to get results."
