New signings Serhou Guirassy and Nayef Aguerd have made major contributions to Stade Rennais easing to the top of the table in a flying start to the 2020-21 Ligue 1 Uber Eats season.

Third last term, the Breton club have a first UEFA Champions League group stage campaign to look forward, and have hit the ground running domestically with 13 points from an unbeaten opening five matches.

Integral to that opening have been Guirassy and Aguerd.

The forward has struck three times in four top-flight outings since his summer arrival from relegated Amiens SC, including a fabulous overhead kick in last weekend's hugely impressive 3-0 win over AS Saint-Étienne.

"And it's not just the goal!" explained coach Julien Stéphan. "It's everything he does for the team, the runs he makes into space, the defensive work that he puts in, the way he puts himself about. He won us a huge number of free-kicks in the first-half and was a real handful for their centre-backs."

"He's going to be an important player for us, his ability to hold the ball up is precious to us," added teammate Benjamin Bourigeaud. "If we are under pressure he's able to provide a reliable outlet for us!"

When Rennes have been under pressure, they have been able to count on Aguerd. The Morocco international centre-back — a summer signing from Dijon who has also scored two goals — has slotted in seamlessly alongside Damien da Silva in a burgeoning partnership.

"It's going well because we talk a lot!" said Da Silva. "We've been exchanging ideas since the day he arrived and we get on well both on and off the pitch. He's been thrown in from the start because he's got the quality, and he's been showing that!

"Of course there is still plenty to improve, but we'll continue to talk things through, so I think we will continue to improve!"
