Neymar Jr. is suspended as Paris Saint-Germain look to get back to winning ways against Ligue 1 Uber Eats basement-dwellers Nîmes Olympique on Wednesday evening.

Neymar was in fine form on Sunday, even if his side couldn't say the same following their 3-2 defeat at the hands of FC Lorient - the team whom Nîmes replaced at the foot of the table.

The Brazilian superstar scored a pair of penalties which he had earned, but goals from Laurent Abergel, Yoane Wissa and, in the final minute, Terem Moffi meant that Mauricio Pochettino suffered his first defeat since succeeding Thomas Tuchel as PSG coach at the start of January.

Naughty Ney

Neymar wasn't booked at the Stade du Moustoir, but four earlier yellow cards mean he is unavailable for Wednesday's game. He joins the suspended Marco Verratti on the sidelines, as well as club captain Marquinhos and, in all likelihood, first-choice goalkeeper Keylor Navas due to groin and rib injuries respectively.

"It can be a physical problem," Pochettino said of the defeat. "It's clear that we're working on it. It's an accident, and it happens in football. I remain optimistic. We lose together, but I'm primarily responsible. Marco's an important player, but you have to know how to play without certain players."

Ander Herrera, Abdou Diallo and Juan Bernat remain sidelined with longer-term injuries, but Pochettino is likely to pick as strong a side as possible as the champions look to close the gap to league leaders LOSC, who are now three points away.

History on PSG's side

Nîmes, who lost 3-1 at Angers SCO last Sunday, have only ever beaten PSG once in a competitive game - their first meeting back in October 1992, when Philippe Vercruysse scored a brace in a 3-2 win at the Parc des Princes.

That former PSG coach Laurent Blanc was playing for les Crocos that day perhaps bring into sharper focus quite how long ago that was.

Recent history hasn't been much kinder to Jérôme Arpinon's side: PSG have won their four meetings over the last few seasons with an aggregate score of 14-2. Pochettino's opposite number isn't looking for excuses, though.

Amphibious crocodiles?

"It's a difficult season and we're going to have tough games, but we'll need to get our heads above water quickly," he said. "We'll try to put another strategy in place, maybe take less risks, be a bit more direct. Defeat hurt the boys, but they know how to bounce back quickly."

Centre-backs Loïck Landre and Pablo Martinez are out with thigh and back injuries, while midfielder Sidy Sarr is yet to overcome a concussion. Lucas Deaux will continue to fill in at the back, with Paraguay international Andrés Cubas anchoring the midfield.
