Bruno Guimaraes scored his first career brace - his first a spot-kick - as Olympique Lyonnais climbed onto the Ligue 1 Uber Eats podium with a 4-1 win over FC Lorient on Saturday.

Memphis Depay is Lyon's regular penalty-taker, but the Dutchman was suspended for les Gones' game at the Groupama Stadium.

Houssem Aouar had taken, and scored, the only two penalties not converted by Memphis so far this season, but despite opening the scoring he stepped aside for Guimaraes to make it 3-0 from the spot after the Brazilian midfielder had been fouled in the box.

"I've never missed a penalty, even in the youth teams," Guimaraes explained of his first goal, converted at the second time of asking after Lorient goalkeeper Paul Nardi had stepped off his line early to save his first attempt.

"The first attempt, the goalkeeper had moved a lot; much less on the second and I was able to score."

Guimaraes covered every blade of grass on Saturday, and completed his brace six minutes later with a low finish beyond Nardi following a smart through-ball from second-half substitute Islam Slimani.

"This is my first brace with Lyon," said the 23-year-old, who had never previously hit a double for any club. "I'm happy about this. We did our job to put pressure on Monaco and the others. Our goal remains to qualify for Champions League.

"Currently, we're third but I'd rather not watch Monaco against Reims on Sunday!"
