A six-time World Player of the Year and arguably the greatest football player of all time, everyone knows Lionel Messi, don't they?! Ligue1.com picks out five key things about Paris Saint-Germain's recent acquisition from Barcelona, just in case…
1) A kid with the Old Boys
Messi may have just concluded his career with Barcelona after 21 years, 778 games, 672 goals, 305 assists and 35 major honours to his name, but his journey might have been so different.
Born in Rosario, Sante Fe, Messi joined local team Newell's Old Boys - the side his football-mad family supported - when he was six years old, and he looked destined for a senior career with them after nearly 500 goals at youth level.
But at 10, the youngster was diagnosed with panhypopituitarism - a growth hormone condition which affects less than 0.01 per cent of the global population. Newell's ultimately couldn't afford to pay for his treatment, and Barcelona could.
After making his debut for Barca's first team just four months and 23 days past his 16th birthday, Messi was taken under the wing of former PSG favourite Ronaldinho at the Camp Nou, and the rest, as they say, is history.
2) Ramos rivalry
Messi may now find himself PSG teammates with Sergio Ramos, but the pair have a career rivalry which puts the Argentine's perceived one with Cristiano Ronaldo to shame.
A more direct opponent than his fellow forward on the field, Messi first came up against centre-back Ramos in November 2003, when the long-time Real Madrid captain was still at Sevilla. Messi scored a hat-trick that day, but it didn't always go his way against El Capitano.
Messi has scored 26 goals against Ramos, but Ramos has helped shut him out 18 times in Clasico fixtures… as well as being sent off twice for fouling the forward.
There was certainly no love lost when they were on opposite sides of Spain's biggest fixture, but now they have joined forces - as part of a summer influx which has also seen Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi and Georginio Wijnaldum arrive at the Parc des Princes - Ramos, at least, has changed his tune.
"I like to play with the best players and Messi has been one of the best in the world," he said recently. "I've always said that Messi will always have a role in my team."
3) MSN to MNM
Ramos and Messi may be building bridges fast, but Paris already have a resident superstar who is firm friends with Messi in Neymar Jr. The pair combined for 299 goals and 166 assists in their time together at Barcelona, and the Brazilian has said numerous times that he dreamed of being reunited with the Argentine.
Perhaps less clear in recent seasons was that they would meet again as PSG teammates rather than Barca ones, but Neymar reportedly petitioned Messi to join him in Paris, with some outlets in Spain saying that he was even willing to give up his No.10 jersey to his old friend and teammate.
As it happens, Messi will wear the No.30 jersey at the Parc des Princes this term, but Neymar has shown his delight either way, posting "Back together" on his Instagram stories on Tuesday.
Luis Suarez was the third part of the prolific puzzle that came to be known as MSN in Spain. Whilst the Uruguayan is now at Atlético Madrid, nobody in the French capital will be lamenting the fact that completing a final-third trio at PSG will be one Kylian Mbappé.
Mbappé's numbers at PSG are phenomenal: 132 goals and 62 assists in 172 games in all competitions giving him a goal involvement at a barely fathomable rate at one every 69 minutes he has played since arriving from Monaco in 2017. At 22, he is also the only one of the aforementioned to have won a FIFA World Cup.
Then MNM Show? You'd better believe it.
4) Picking on PSG?
PSG will be relieved to see Messi lining up for them rather than against them. The 34-year-old has 11 goals in four assists in 16 career meetings with French clubs, including six and one against his current employers. Paris have previously won three of 10 meetings with Messi.
Messi goals helped nudge PSG out of the UEFA Champions league knock-out stages in 2012-13, 2014-15 and 2016-17 - the latter one famous for the Neymar-inspired Remontada before he became the world's most expensive player in swapping Barca for PSG.
Paris drew the most recent blood, beating Barcelona 5-2 on aggregate on the way to last season's semi-finals, and the hope now is that they can finally be crowned European champions.
"For me on a personal level, I would love to win another Champions League," Messi said. "I've said so in previous years, and I think I've come to the ideal place that's ready for that. We have the same goals. This club has impressive players, one of the best squads in the world and, hopefully, we can achieve that goal which Paris wants so much, I want so much and hopefully we can enjoy it with the people of Paris too."
5) Argentine connection
Messi will become the 15th Argentine to play for PSG, and the fifth currently on the books after coach Mauricio Pochettino and teammates Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes and Mauro Icardi.
Carlos Bianchi was the first to turn out for the capital club, joining from Stade de Reims in 1977 and hitting 64 goals in two seasons before leaving for RC Strasbourg Alsace in 1979. Javier Pastore was the first major signing of the Qatar Sports Investment era in 2011, while Di Maria is the most decorated to date with 17 major honours.
