Maxence Caqueret insists Olympique Lyonnais are "on the right track" under new coach Peter Bosz despite Sunday's 4-1 rout at Rennes that derailed the seven-time Ligue 1 Uber Eats champions.

Caqueret was part of an OL side that was dismantled at Roazhon Park by a rampant Rennes who struck four times to leave Bosz's men with 21 goals conceded, the club's worst tally at this stage of a top-flight season since 1982/83.

Lyon are in seventh place after 13 games, four points off a podium place and five off second, synonymous with automatic UEFA Champions League group stage qualification. But Caqueret is confident things are coming together.

"I've seen the difference the new coach has made. He's brought something new, something that we lacked, I think: that winning mentality, that desire to fight together. It's something we've got back this year and it's very important for winning titles and trophies," said the France U21 midfielder of his Dutch boss, who was appointed this summer.

"You have to give it time, it's still new. There's been a lot of improvements, but there are still some little things to change. But I think we're on the right track, and we're going to do some good things this year."

Lyon have already secured their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League with four wins from four group stage matches so far.

Caqueret has featured in all of those continental fixtures, and has also been an ever-present domestically, starting all but two of his team's Ligue 1 Uber Eats fixtures this term as Bosz — as he did previously at Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen — gives his young players an opportunity to express their talent.

"Our coach's trademark is bringing the ball out from the back. It's something we work on a lot, that's where our good performances and good moves come from," explained Caqueret, who has mostly been employed as a 'number eight' in a three-man midfield.

"It's a tactic that suits me. I like having the ball a lot, I've got plenty of gas in the tank, so it works well with my characteristics. And when it works well, I couldn't be happier."
