New Marseille striker Cédric Bakambu has admitted that he chose to sign for the club because he wanted 'a sporting challenge' after spending four seasons in China at Beijing Guoan.

Nicknamed 'Bakagoal', the DR Congo international returned to France after a spell at Sochaux between 2010-2014 and explained his reasons for penning a two-and-a-half year deal with Jorge Sampaoli's side.

"I know what OM represents in France and Africa," said the 30-year-old striker. "There is a lot of passion and history around this club. The president (Pablo Longoria) and I have known each other for quite a few years and I also spoke with the coach Jorge Sampaoli. No matter where the coach wants me to play, the most important thing is that the team and I perform.

Sporting challenge

"After four years in China, I purely wanted a sporting challenge. When my agent offered me the chance to sign for OM, I immediately said 'yes'. I had a good feeling after speaking with the president and the deal was done quickly. I grew up in France and I played for Sochaux. I always wanted to return to Ligue 1 Uber Eats at some point in my career. Better late than never!"

Bakambu scored 48 goals in 71 appearances for the Chinese Super League side and will provide extra firepower for Sampaoli's men as they battle for Champions League qualification for next season. But the striker revealed that there is more to his game than just scoring goals.

Attributes

"My qualities are speed, playing on the last man and my aerial ability but I know I still have a few areas to work on. I am not the best striker in the world but I have confidence in myself and I hope to bring my qualities to the team. Since I left (Ligue 1 Uber Eats), I have gained more experience. I am 30 years old, I am a father, I have travelled and have experienced great atmospheres in Turkey and Spain. Today, I am a better all-round player."

Bakambu has not played for two months due to the end of the Chinese Super League season but has assured OM fans that he is in good shape and they won't have to wait long to see him pull on the jersey.

"I am a professional. I played my last game in November but I kept in shape. I'm sure the fitness coaches will get me in the best possible condition to be ready to help my team mates. It's normal that there are doubts about my fitness but I trust myself. Ligue 1 Uber Eats is a difficult championship and I know that the level is very high. I am here to help the team and I hope we will be successful together."
