Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have pried Rennes young gun Mathys Tel from France, signing the 17-year-old France youth international striker on a €28m deal.

Tel made headlines when he made his Ligue 1 Uber Eats debut with Rennes aged just 16 years and 110 days, and now the native of the Paris region (Sarcelles) is in the limelight again after putting pen to paper on a new deal with one of Europe's biggest clubs.

Salihamidzic: 'One of the greatest talents in Europe'

Given the young age at which he debuted, it's fair to say that the young Tel has shown plenty of potential, and that's what Bayern Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic underlined after the deal was done.

"Mathys Tel is one of the greatest talents in Europe, a very fast, technically strong and versatile striker," explained Salihamidzic. "With the French U17 team, he became European champion this year, as captain of the team. We have been watching him for a long time and have now managed to convince him to take his next important steps in Munich. We are proud of this, because there were many clubs that wanted to sign him. The development of such an extraordinary young player is an exciting project for us all. Mathys needs time now, of course, he needs challenges and pace. We are all convinced that he has a great career ahead of him and that he will help our team."

With ultra-prolific striker Robert Lewandowski moving on to Barcelona after eight successful years in Bavaria, there is room in the squad for new forwards to assert themselves, and Tel is evidently raring to go now that he has secured a move to one of world football's greatest clubs - even if he will be in competition with a certain FC Metz alumnus named Sadio Mané.

"FC Bayern is one of the best teams in the world," beamed the youngster. "I am very much looking forward to this great challenge and will give everything for this club. The talks with Hasan Salihamidzic and the FC Bayern officials impressed me a lot and quickly made me realise that I definitely want to go to Munich."
