Breel Embolo got off the mark for AS Monaco again Stade Rennais FC on Saturday, rescuing a 1-1 draw, and the Switzerland striker thinks his goal is the first of many for his new employers.

Embolo joined Monaco from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer, but was yet to open his account following games against RC Strasbourg Alsace and PSV Eindhoven - the former a 2-1 win in Ligue 1 Uber Eats; the latter a 3-2 extra-time loss in the UEFA Champions League.

But there was to be no denying him at the Stade Louis II on Saturday, Embolo capitalising on a defensive mix-up to cancel out Gaëtan Laborde's opener 18 minutes from time. The 25-year-old was understandably upbeat after the game.

"We never give up!" he enthused. "We have the mindset, the physical and mental qualities to achieve this kind of performance, so imagine us playing with 11! Now we have to build upon this over the next few weeks.

"A big season awaits us, and there are positives to take from this match."

Youssouf Fofana had been sent off just 15 minutes into the match on Saturday, and Embolo thinks a draw in such circumstances shows that the team is gelling fast.

"Clearly, even if there was the disappointment of the second leg against PSV. Now we'll have to focus on the Europa League, which is also a great competition. We wanted to show another side of ourselves today and we did that.

"Getting back to 1-1 with 10 men is a very good thing. We have to continue like this, because it's a long season."
