RC Strasbourg Alsace have announced that Julien Stéphan is no longer head coach, the 42-year-old having been relieved of his duties after a catastrophic Coupe de France elimination at the hands Angers - ironically the only side Strasbourg have beaten in the league this season.

After taking the Alsatian club to a superb sixth-placed finish in his first season in charge (2021-22), Julien Stéphan looked set for big things in the east of France. But a rough start to the current season, with just one win (eight draws and eight defeats), has left the side in 19th place, four points shy of safety, and the club opted for a change of direction.

It's over

"The President of Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace, Marc Keller, notified Julien Stéphan, coach of the Racing professional team, of his preliminary lay-off on Monday 9 January 2023," read a statement off the club's official website. "Mathieu Le Scornet will act as interim coach as of today and until further notice."

Le Scornet's first challenge at the helm of Le Racing comes in the form of high-flying Lens - second on the table versus second-bottom - in Ligue 1 Uber Eats Round 18 action at the Stade de la Meinau on Wednesday night.
