Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico's family have issued an update on the Spaniard's situation after he was kicked in the head by a horse on Sunday morning.

Gianluigi Donnarumma's understudy at the Parc des Princes, Rico returned to Spain after PSG secured the Ligue 1 Uber Eats title with their 1-1 draw at RC Strasbourg Alsace on Saturday.

The 29-year-old was riding when he collided with a runaway horse, was thrown from his mount, and subsequently suffered a head trauma which has left him in intensive care.

'Sergio is in good hands'

"Sergio is in good hands, fighting to get better while he receives the best care from the medical team at Virgin del Rocio Hospital," read a family statement delivered through his agent. "We must act with precaution, especially in the next 48 hours.

"We are awaiting the results of his medical evolution which we hope will be favourable so we are able to tell you about his improvement as soon as possible."

Rico joined PSG from Sevilla in 2019, initially on loan, and has since made 24 appearances in all competitions, keeping 14 clean sheets.

Everyone at Ligue 1 Uber Eats and the wider French football community wishes Rico a speedy recovery.
