Mama Baldé, leading the line in place of the visitors’ injured captain, struck for the first time this season to help Lyon continue their good run of form.

In a match that was largely one-way traffic, Lyon picked up their fifth win in six matches to move into tenth place, beating what had been an in-form Lorient 2-0. In the first half Lyon did their best to test Yann Mvogo, with Saïd Benrahma and Nemanja Matic both getting efforts on target, before Clinton Mata had probably the best chance of the half.

Despite failing to break the deadlock himself, Mata, in for the suspended Ainsley Maitland-Niles, would turn provider after the break, crossing for Nicolás Tagliafico to open the scoring. His effort was soon followed by Baldé doubling the lead, the former Troyes striker accelerating past Julien Laporte to slot home.

Even with the lead, Lyon kept the bit between their teeth, with substitute Rayan Cherki testing Mvogo from close range. Continuing to dominate possession, the visitors did well to close down the game, as the win, with nine matches left in the season, moves them 11 points ahead of the relegation places ahead of another away trip, to in-form Toulouse next weekend.

As for Lorient, the hosts saw their three-match winning run come to an end, but they remain a point ahead of Le Havre, who occupy the relegation playoff spot. Next week they'll travel to face AS Monaco in what's sure to be a tricky encounter.
