Dijon may have shipped four goals at Lyon on Friday evening but great things are expected from the working relationship of Alfred Gomis and new goalkeeping coach Grégory Coupet.

Senegalese international Gomis returned from injury at the start of the season and is now working with Coupet, seven times a Ligue 1 Uber Eats champion with Olympique Lyonnais. The trip to Lyon was not a happy one, ironic given Coupet's history with the club and that it was an outstanding display at OL last season that established Gomis as the club's number one goalkeeper. On just his sixth Ligue 1 start, the giant goalkeeper made 10 saves, kept a clean sheet and almost single-handedly earned Dijon a point.

Speaking to The Ligue 1 Show on beINSports Dijon coach Stéphane Jobard said: "That performance showed everyone what he’s capable of. He was so impressive, it was like someone had put a sheet of Plexiglas in our goal! He was decisive, and he kept on repelling the danger!"

Gomis added: "I made lots of saves, but it wasn’t the best game of my life… that is still to come! I always hope the next game will be the best of my career! I never felt like the back-up goalkeeper. There’s always competition for places, and when you join a club there’s no guarantee you’ll be first choice. Your performances are the only thing that can guarantee that!"

"Greg is always positive"

An Africa Cup of Nations finalist with Senegal in 2019, Gomis hopes working with Coupet can take him to the next level: "Greg is always positive, and that’s very important to me because I am like that too, so we work well together! As a kid I used to watch him on TV, he played in the Champions League, and for France. Now it’s a real pleasure to work with him!”

Coupet commented: "He’s very good at reading the trajectory of the ball, anticipating in dangerous situations and forcing the striker to go where he wants him to. Add his height and ability with ball at feet and you’ve got a very complete goalkeeper!"

Working with one of his childhood heroes is a dream come true for the Senegalese who counts Coupet among the legends of the game: "I also watched Buffon, Van der Sar, Schmeichel, Casillas too! There were a number of goalkeepers I watched and tried to learn from!"

"Still more to come from me"

Having come through the ranks at Torino and spent much of his career in Serie A, Gomis’ Italian experience is bearing its fruits in France:  "The big difference in Italy was the tactical work, a goalkeeper is very involved in the tactical side, shouting out instructions to team-mates. In France you still have to do that, but we work far more on individual qualities here, which allows players to shine a little more!"

While Dijon are expected to be battling at the wrong end of the table once again this season, Gomis is determined to aim as high as possible and continue to surpass himself: "I’ve done good things, but there is still more to come from me! I’m happy with the way my career has gone, but I’m always looking to challenge myself!"
