Where will Messi fit in at PSG?

Lionel Messi's arrival at Paris Saint-Germain sees him team up with Neymar and Kylian Mbappé to form potentially one of the most potent strikeforces ever seen, but where will the Argentine icon fit into Mauricio Pochettino's tactical plans?

ligue1.com looks at the luxury problem facing the PSG coach following Messi's signing.

4-3-3: Messi doing what Messi does

The Argentina international won most of the 35 trophies he picked up in 17 years at Barcelona playing on the right side, using his outrageously gifted left foot to wreak havoc on opposition defences: 778 games in all competitions, 672 goals and 266 assists — including 38 strikes and 12 assists in 47 outings last season — show the extent to which he has been a success (if you somehow didn't know already…).

Could he work yet more magic alongside Mbappé and Neymar in a front three?

"You're going to get a machine," Spanish football expert Graham Hunter, who has watched Messi's rise from prodigy to superstar in Barcelona, told Le Beau Jeu podcast. "He will be integrated into making sure the partnership up front works…He's had brilliant partnerships in his career, and none better than with Luis Suarez.

"But when we saw Suarez, Neymar and Messi up front, it wasn't just three great talents, it was more than the sum of the parts, and I think potentially — given where Mbappé likes to play, given where Neymar likes to play and what he feels about Messi, and given the state Messi is in, the drive he'll have to show the people who have let him down, 'This is what you have lost'…There will be a period of adaptation, yes, but I'm certain that he has the mentality, the character, the power to take this opportunity and make something special out of it."

Potential line-up: Navas (or Donnarumma); Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembé, Bernat; Wijnaldum, Gueye, Verratti; Messi, Mbappé, Neymar

4-2-3-1: Number 30 as a number '10'

Pochettino employed Marco Verratti with varying degrees of success in a role higher up the pitch last season, slotting the Italy international and UEFA EURO 2020 winner in behind the central striker, either Mbappé or Mauro Icardi.

Messi gives Pochettino the option of putting the ex-Barcelona man into that role which also removes the headache of what to do with Angel Di Maria, who would be the man whose playing time is most likely to suffer at the expense of his compatriot.

Pochettino could then play 'Quatre Fantastiques' — the Fantastic Four — again, though this time with Mbappé through the middle instead of Icardi, Messi behind him with Neymar on the left and Di Maria on the right. Verratti would revert to his habitual deeper-lying midfield role with — most likely — Georginio Wijnaldum for company.

Potential line-up: Navas (or Donnarumma); Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembé, Bernat; Wijnaldum, Verratti; Di Maria, Messi, Neymar; Mbappé

3-5-2: Up front with Mbappé

Another option for Pochettino would be to give Messi a freer rein on the right-hand side, allowing him to buzz around Mbappé, who naturally favours the left, in a front two. Don't worry, there would also be room for Neymar with the Brazilian slotting into the number 10 role.

Though this is probably the least likely set-up for Pochettino to use on a frequent basis, it does — on paper — look absolutely mouthwatering for those who love attacking football.

With a first-choice back three of Marquinhos, Sergio Ramos and Presnel Kimpembé, wing-backs Achraf Hakimi and — when fully fit — Juan Bernat would have freedom to roam forward, essentially giving PSG five attackers with Wijnaldum also coming into the equation from midfield.

Potential line-up: Navas (or Donnarumma); Marquinhos, Ramos, Kimpembé; Hakimi, Wijnaldum, Neymar, Verratti, Bernat; Messi, Mbappé
