Kylian Mbappé is expected to return to the France side for their UEFA Nations League encounter with Sweden on Tuesday after again missing out as Les Bleus claimed a decisive 1-0 win in Portugal on Saturday.

“He is insistent, he will be ready,” said France coach Didier Deschamps when asked if Mbappé would be able to feature in the last of the world champions’ three matches in this latest international break.

“There is no question of him being handed back to his club. We are going to savour and appreciate it. It is the last match and we will take stock afterwards with everyone.”

Mbappé was called up to the France squad for this month’s games despite sitting out Paris Saint-Germain’s last two outings with a hamstring problem. After playing no part in Wednesday’s 2-0 home friendly defeat by Finland at the Stade de France, Mbappé watched on from the stand at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon as the World Cup holders - with PSG’s Presnel Kimpembe the only home-based player in the side - beat Portugal 1-0 on Saturday night with N’Golo Kanté scoring the only goal early in the second half.

The victory allowed France to secure top spot in League A Group 3 as they sit three points ahead of Portugal with one game left and have the better head-to-head record against their nearest rivals. As such, Les Bleus are now guaranteed a place at the four-team Nations League finals in October next year, while holders Portugal are now out. And there is nothing at stake in Tuesday’s clash with Sweden at the Stade de France.

“It was one of our best performances,” Deschamps said when asked if the Portugal win was among France’s best since their World Cup triumph in 2018. “We can also say that because of the quality of our opponents. But it was a performance that showed the collective quality of the team, their ability to deliver in big games. If there was a time to stand up, it was tonight. It is hugely satisfying, although I never doubted them.”
