Paris Saint-Germain's Italian midfielder is on top of the continent following the penalty shoot-out win over England in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley on Sunday night.
Italy are once again European champions - ending a 52-year wait - after prevailing over host nation England 3-2 on penalties (1-1 a.e.t.), with Paris Saint-Germain's Marco Verratti featuring the day after clubmates Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes lifted the Copa America with Argentina.
Early setback
It was a huge challenge for the Azzurri after they went a goal down to Luke Shaw's beautifully taken early opener. In front of tens of thousands of England fans packed into London's Wembley Stadium - all hoping for a first international trophy in 55 years - the atmosphere was electric.
But a leveller from Leonardo Bonucci - who tapped home after Marco Verratti's close-range header had ricocheted off the post - saw the match go to extra time and then penalties.
Oh England
And when it came time for the shoot-out - England's historic Achilles heel - rumoured Paris Saint-Germain transfer target Gianluigi Donnarumma was the hero, turning back efforts from Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka to clinch it 3-2 and unleash a wave of joy across Italy.
Verratti was a starter for Roberto Mancini's side and duly over the moon after the continental triumph!
