A LOSC side looking to take some strong domestic form continental were brought back down to earth on Wednesday night, a lucky Burak Yilmaz free-kick not enough to avoid defeat as Les Dogues went down 2-1 to FC Salzburg in UEFA Champions League Matchday 2 action.

After Ligue 1 Uber Eats wins over Strasbourg and Reims, Jocelyn Gourvennec's LOSC were looking for a maiden win of the UEFA Champions League campaign as they travelled to Salzburg on Wednesday, but a pair of penalties converted by Karim Adeyemi (35', 53') left Les Dogues disappointed.

'Being clinical helps a lot'

"We've been talking about it a lot - our finishing isn't up to scratch," lamented Gourvennec, who has had big shoes to fill after replacing Christophe Galtier at the helm of the reigning Ligue 1 Uber Eats champions ion the summer. "It cost us two points against Wolfsburg (0-0) and it was the same story tonight. Being clinical helps a lot. Salzburg were more clinical than us tonight."

Gourvennec did have the consolation of Turkish veteran Burak Yilmaz pulling one back with a powerful free-kick that Salzburg 'keeper Philipp Köhn mishandled (62'), but it wasn't enough to make up for the two penalties that stuck LOSC boss's craw.

'We never gave up'

"We started off very well. We were disciplined when we didn't have the ball. Salzburg pressed a lot and we didn't fall into the trap; we played well out of defence. As for the penalty... There are things I will never understand. That call had a huge impact. It got them back in the game. In the second half, I have nothing to say about the second penalty. But we never gave up. We were still in the match and if we had been the little bit more clinical, we could have made it 2-2."

LOSC's next test is a stiff one - they face in-form Marseille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Ligue 1 Uber Eats Round 9 action on Sunday evening.
