As UEFA Euro 2024 draws closer, we’re focusing on a player from each of the 24 participating countries (except for France). In this latest article of the series, the focus will be on current RC Lens defender Kevin Danso.

Danso will represent Austria this summer in Germany, as Das Team are in Group D, where they’ll be facing France, Poland, and the Netherlands. With all these squads having quality attacks, the Lens standout will be a vital player in defense.

Even though Danso is playing for Austria, he had an opportunity to play for other national teams, considering the central defender was born in Austria to Ghanaian parents before moving to Milton Keynes in England at the age of six.

The center-back had to make a difficult decision on who he wanted to represent. Danso eventually chose Austria as the country to play for, but in an interview with L’Equipe last year, the Lens star revealed that he doesn’t forget his Ghanaian roots or the country that saw him grow up.

“I arrived in England when I was six years old. I could have played for England. I lived there for 10 years before going to Augsburg. And it’s strange, sometimes I feel more English than anything else, but sometimes more Austrian or more Ghanaian as well. I am happy to have this multiculturality, it allows me to be who I am.”

Danso’s career, much like his background, has seen him play in multiple countries. He began his career joining FC Augsburg’s youth system and eventually made it up to the first team, but Danso also had loan stints at Southampton and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The 25-year-old arrived to Les Sang et Or from Augsburg in 2017 and has become a pillar on defense, making 114 appearances across all competitions. In an interview with The Athletic in 2022, Danso stated that with the French club, he’s found the right fit that has allowed him to grow as a footballer.

“I saw a Paul Pogba interview recently and he was talking about when you find a club where the manager and fans are behind you it means you can play freely as a footballer. That is what I have found at Lens. From the minute they made contact with me, it felt like the right thing. I wanted to prove to them exactly why they believed in me.”

Danso played a role in helping Lens challenge Paris Saint-Germain for the Ligue 1 title during the 2022-23 season. While the team fell short of the league title, in the following campaign, they did play in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, allowing Danso to showcase his talents at the international level and secure his spot on the Austrian national team for Euro 2024.

This summer, the Lens standout aims to become a household name by shutting down top attackers and helping Austria advance beyond the group stage.
