As UEFA Euro 2024 draws closer, we’re focusing on a player from each of the 24 participating countries (except for France). In this latest article of the series, we’ll concentrate on FC Metz star Georges Mikautadze.

Mikautadze has had quite an eventful few months, playing a key role in the Georgia national team’s historic achievement of securing a spot in Euro 2024. This marks the first time Georgia has ever qualified for the competition, which they accomplished through the playoff in March.

The 23-year-old will be a player to watch at the tournament in Germany, as Georgia is in Group F alongside Czechia, Portugal, and Türkiye. If Willy Sagnol and his team want to advance past the group stage, Mikautadze will have to provide the goals as the striker.

Mikautadze has made 24 appearances for Georgia since making his debut in 2021, scoring nine goals. The goal-scoring could be coming for the national team as the Metz standout had an impressive end to his season. In an interview last month with RMC Sport, Sagnol praised the player’s recent form and overcoming early adversity in his career.

“He is a talented player. The reason he’s making strides a bit later is because he didn’t put in enough effort during his younger days. He had a stint at the Lyon academy, but it didn’t quite pan out. However, he’s now grasping the importance of hard work in achieving success.”

“There was the failure of Ajax, but I think it’s a failure that has made him even more mature. He is in the process of bouncing back. As someone said, almost on his own, he will manage to keep Metz going.”

Metz avoided direct relegation after this 2023-24 Ligue 1 season and they’re currently playing against AS Saint-Étienne in the promotion/relegation tie, fighting to remain in France’s top flight.

One reason they’re in this matchup and not already in Ligue 2 is Mikautadze’s performances toward the end of the campaign. In six of the last eight games, Mikautadze has found the back of the net at least once.

Ligue 1 fans are well aware of his talent, and this summer presents him with an opportunity to truly make a mark and further propel Georgia’s remarkable journey.
