Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappé brushed aside suggestions that his side's 2-0 (3-0 on aggregate) Champions League last-16 elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday would influence his future at the club, where he could be out of contract at the end of next season.
Mbappé, who came off the bench and nearly turned the match around in PSG's narrow 1-0 first-leg defeat to Bayern in Paris, was all but played out of the return leg in Munich as Julian Nagelsmann's side neutralised the French attack.
'Move on'
Despite having a couple of half-chances in the first half, Mbappé couldn't find a way to influence the match - and the tie - in the way he did for France in the World Cup final, where he bagged a sensational hat-trick.
"We're disappointed," said the 24-year-old after the match. "But it is what it is and we have to move on. We have to try to ask ourselves some tough questions and simply move on.
'Tough questions'
What did he feel was missing for the capital club, who failed to progress form the last 16 for the fifth time in seven seasons?
"Not much when you look at the state of both teams: they have a great team and a great squad," he said. "They have a team that is built to win the Champions League. I said it at the beginning of the season, in the first press conference of the season, that we were going to give our all. And that was our all... That's the truth. We're going to ask ourselves the tough questions and go back to our daily routine, which is the league."
Up in the air
The two-year contract Mbappé signed at the end of last season runs through to 2024, with the option for a third season. This option is Mbappé's, not the club's, and is to be exercised or not at the end of the current campaign.
Should he feel that his career ambitions would be best served at another club, and choose not to exercise the option, Paris Saint-Germain could be forced to cash in on the man many believe to be the best player in the world at the end of the 2022-23 season or face losing him on a free a year later.
'We'll see'
With this in the air, Mbappé was asked about his future at the club, but with his habitual media savvy, let nothing slip.
"No, no, I'm calm," he smiled. "My objective is to win the league, and then we'll see."
Paris Saint-Germain will look to widen their eight-point lead atop the domestic standings when they travel to Stade Brestois 29 in Ligue 1 Uber Eats R27 action on Saturday night.
