Champions League: PSG in Pot 1
Paris Saint-Germain will figure in Pot 1 in the draw for the next UEFA Champions League group-stage draw.
With the 2019-2020 edition now underway, UEFA has officialised the composition of pot 1 for the group-stage draw on 29 August. As champions of Ligue 1 Conforama, Paris Saint-Germain know they will be drawn from Pot 1 in the allocation process that also concerns LOSC and OL.
OL can thank Chelsea
Olympique Lyonnais will be in the draw thanks to their third-placed finish in Ligue 1 Conforama last season - but also thanks to Chelsea's winning the UEFA Europa League final against Arsenal on 29 May (4-1). The London club, already qualified for the group stage through their finish in the English Premier League, did not need the group-stage berth afforded them as UEFA Europa League winners, and thus that place went to the third-placed club from the league with the fifth-highest UEFA club coefficient: Ligue 1 Conforama. This enabled OL to avoid the hurdles of the third-qualifying round and play-offs on their way to the group stage.
Paris Saint-Germain: champion status
Despite having a lower UEFA index than Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, like the Russians of Zenit, are protected by national champion status and thus go straight into Pot 1.
Pot 1: FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Zenit St. Petersburg, Chelsea, Liverpool
Which pot for OL?
The other French clubs will have to wait until the end of the qualifying rounds to know which pot they will be drawn from. Olympique Lyonnais currently occupy the last place in pot 2, but this remains under threat from FC Porto, Ajax and Dynamo Kiev, who are involved in qualifying (3rd round) and have a better UEFA index. LOSC will be drawn from Pot 4.
