Deschamps: 'Mbappé wasn't ready'

Kylian Mbappé "wasn't ready" to play for France in their UEFA EURO 2020 qualifiers this month as the Paris Saint-Germain superstar continues his return to full fitness, Didier Deschamps has said.

Mbappé had joined the France squad ahead of their Group H double-header with Iceland and Turkey, but was sent back to his club by Deschamps to ensure he fully recovers from a thigh injury that forced him to miss four of PSG's league games.

"He needs more time," explained Deschamps of Mbappé, who has not made a league start since Week 3. "He left for the very simple reason that he wasn't ready. He wasn't quite there."

He added: "He wanted to come and give himself the chance, but from the moment that that becomes impossible, it was logical to give him back to his club."

Borussia Mönchengladbach's Alassane Plea — formerly of Olympique Lyonnais and OGC Nice — was called up to replace Mbappé in the squad.
