First cap for Areola, Lecomte gets call
Following injury to Hugo Lloris, France boss Didier Deschamps has announced that PSG 'keeper Alphonse Areola will start against Germany and that Montpelier 'keeper Benjamin Lecomte has been called up as third choice.
Hugo Lloris, 'keeper and captain of Deschamps' World Cup-winning side, has sustained a thigh injury on club duties with Tottenham and will miss the UEFA Nations League matches with Germany and the Netherlands on Thursday and Sunday respectively, the France boss indicated on Monday.
First cap for Areola
While Montpellier glovesman Lecomte will be the squad's third-choice 'keeper, top dog duties will be handed to Paris Saint-Germain's Alphonse Areola, who will earn his first senior cap for France in the Nations League clash with 2014 World Cup winners Germany in Munich on Thursday.
"Areola was there with us at the World Cup because I consider him to be one of France's three best 'keepers. He knows the squad well, it's nothing new to him," Deschamps explained. "We have these two matches to play and it makes perfect sense for him to take the number one place for the match on Thursday."
Lloris was in attendance at the France team's training centre in Clairefontaine on Monday to have his injury confirmed and assessed by Les Bleus' medical staff.
