France in Group of Death for UEFA EURO 2020
FIFA World Cup winners France will face European champions Portugal and perennial contenders Germany in a heavyweight Group F at UEFA EURO 2020.
Les Bleus were not spared by Lady Luck at Saturday's group stage draw in the Romanian capital Bucharest as they were pitted with two continental powerhouses as well as one of the winners of March's play-offs.
France know they will play Germany in Munich and could face Hungary in Budapest if they come through their play-off with Iceland and Bulgaria. Didier Deschamps' men might also play either Georgia, Belarus, North Macedonia or Kosovo depending on results, and will find out on 31 March.
"It's a difficult group, but I think Joachim Löw and Fernando Santos think the same thing," explained Deschamps. "It's the most difficult group, but we have to accept it. It's a tough group on paper given the quality of those two opponents and their results on a European and world level. We're perhaps also in the worst position with our opponents coming through the play-offs as they could be the best of those sides."
The tournament starts on 12 June with the final in London a month later.
