PSG and Lille through to Europa League group stage
Paris Saint-Germain lost 4-3 at Maccabi Tel Aviv but still advanced to the group stage of the Europa League 5-4 on aggregate. Lille joined them with a 2-0 home win over Romanian club Vaslui after a goalless first leg.
MACCABI TEL AVIV 4-3 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN (PSG through 5-4 on aggregate)
PSG went in at half-time 1-0 up as Guillaume Hoarau, a scorer in the first leg, won a 39th minute penalty which he himself converted.
At that stage Maccabi needed four unanswered goals to go through. They equalised on the night through Atar (48’), only for Ludovic Giuly to fire PSG in front again (64’) with a fine finish after good work from Nenê.
Avidor (68’) made it 2-2 and Maccabi took the lead on 83 minutes as Medunjanin scored after Tripy Makonda conceded a penalty.
Nenê got on the scoresheet with the game’s third penalty in stoppage time at the end of the game. The Brazilian had won it himself in the stifling heat.
Atar then scored a superb free kick into the top corner to ensure a home win.
Antoine Kombouaré won’t be happy at having conceded four goals but will be delighted that PSG are in Friday lunchtime’s draw for the group stage.
LILLE 2-0 VASLUI (Lille go through 2-0 on aggregate)
Lille had drawn their three previous games 0-0 and the home crowd was beginning to get nervous with the scoreline still blank after 68 minutes.
Everything changed when Moussa Sow was brought down by visiting goalkeeper Kuciak inside the area. Kuciak was sent off and Yohan Cabaye tucked away the penalty.
Ten minutes from time Lille could start their preparations for another continental adventure as Aurélien Chedjou strode forward and unleashed a shot from 30 metres, which was deflected into the net.
Before making the breakthrough, Lille had enjoyed the better of the chances, just as they had in the first leg.
