PSG beat Maccabi, Lille draw in Romania
Paris Saint-Germain will take a 2-0 lead to Israel for the second leg of their Europa League play-off tie with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Peguy Luyindula and Guillaume Hoarau scored the PSG goals. Lille drew 0-0 at Romanian outfit Vaslui.
The second leg of both ties involving Ligue 1 clubs take place on Thursday August 26. Montpellier were knocked out in the third qualifying round by Hungarian club Györ.
Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Maccabi Tel Aviv
PSG coach Antoine Kombouaré had half an eye on Sunday’s home Ligue 1 game with Bordeaux and rotated his squad, making eight changes from the team that drew at Lille in Week 2 of Ligue 1 action.
Luyindula got his chance and took his first opportunity as early as the third minute. A Jean-Eudes Maurice cross was cleared by the Maccabi defender Avi Strol straight in to Luyindula and the forward needed no second invitation, sidefooting home.
PSG controlled the game and Maccabi always looked prone to further defensive lapses. On the hour Tripy Makonda chipped a ball to Ludovic Giuly, who pulled it back to Guillaume Hoarau to finish first time.
Despite their dominance, PSG could have conceded late on when Apoula Edel – getting a game with Grégory Coupet rested – only succeded in pushing a Maor Buzaglo shot out as far as Djibril Sidibé, who blazed wildly over the bar.
Vaslui 0-0 Lille
Lille return from the Romania-Moldova border with a precious goalless draw. LOSC ‘keeper Mickaël Landreau enjoyed a fairly quiet evening once Lille had succeeded in calming the home side’s ardour.
The best chance of the game fell late on to Lille’s Brazilian substitute Tulio De Melo, who came on in the first half for the injured Ludovic Obraniak. De Melo’s header from a Mathieu Debuchy cross grazed the frame of the goal.
Like Kombouaré, Lille coach Rudi Garcia made a number of changes from his traditional starting line-up and the side appeared reinvigorated when regular first-teamers Gervinho and Eden Hazard were brought on to spice up the attack in the second half.
Lille will fancy their chances of completing the job at home to earn a place in the group stage of the competition.
