Reims' Doumbia fires Mali into AFCON finals
Stade de Reims' Mali striker Moussa Doumbia struck the winner in the 1-0 victory over Gabon that assured the West African nation of a place in the 2019 African Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.
Mali, who have been knocked out in the group stage of the last two editions of AFCON, have officially qualified for the 2019 edition by beating Gabon 1-0 thanks to a lone strike from Stade de Reims hit-man Moussa Doumbia.
The 24-year-old, who clinched victory for his club on the opening day of the Ligue 1 Conforama season, was first in at the far post to turn home after Moussa Djenepo's initial effort had deflected off a defender and onto the cross-bar.
The Eagles have gone unbeaten in all five of their AFCON qualifiers so far, but for Gabon, who were without former Monaco, Saint-Etienne and LOSC man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and ex-Lorient and Marseille midfielder Mario Lemina, anything but a win in their next clash, with Burundi, will ring the death knell for their qualification hopes.
