PSG knew a victory in Belgium would leave them on the brink of qualification for the last 16 already, just halfway through their Group A campaign. They had beaten Real Madrid and Galatasaray in their opening two games and here Thomas Tuchel's side proved far too strong for the 1978 European Cup runners-up, who were previously unbeaten this season.
Tuchel left Mbappé and Edinson Cavani on the bench at kick-off as Icardi and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting started in attack alongside Ángel Di María, with the Argentine exceptional from beginning to end as PSG kept up their prolific recent form in front of goal.
They silenced the home fans by taking an early lead as Thiago Silva arrowed a long ball forward to Di María on the right. He controlled the ball on his head before delivering a pass with the outside of his left boot for compatriot Icardi to finish first-time (7').
Di María missed the target after being sent clear shortly after, and the hosts grew into the game, ensuring that only one goal separated the teams at the interval. However, Tuchel's decision to send on Mbappé for Choupo-Moting took this game away from the Belgians.
Four assists for Di María
Paris doubled their lead in the 61st minute when Di María played a one-two with Mbappé on the left before seeking Icardi at the far post - home goalkeeper Simon Mignolet intervened but could only knock the ball out to Mbappé who headed in.
Two minutes after that it was 3-0 as Club were dispossessed just outside their own penalty area and Mbappé set up Icardi to score his second of the evening, and his fifth goal in four games this month - he also netted the winner against Galatasaray.
Stunning team move
Di María then released Mbappé to sprint half the length of the field only to poke wide, but things would soon get worse for Club. Krépin Diatta had the ball in the net for them in the 68th minute only for his effort to be disallowed for handball, and Mbappé went on to complete a hat-trick with two more late goals.
First a simply stunning team move, starting with goalkeeper Keylor Navas and ending with Di María setting up Mbappé to round Mignolet and score, made it 4-0 (79’). Then another remarkable Di María pass with the outside of his left boot curled in behind Brandon Mechele and allowed Mbappé to put the seal on a fine victory.
PSG now have a maximum nine points in Group A and are yet to concede a goal in three games. They are five points clear of Real Madrid and a win at home to Club at the Parc des Princes on November 6 will see them qualify for the knockout phase with two matches to spare.
THE PLAYER: Kylian Mbappé
What a cameo from Mbappé, who came on in the 52nd minute and scored three goals in the space of 22 minutes as PSG ran away with the game. That hat-trick allowed him to double his tally for the season in all competitions. He also claimed an assist for Mauro Icardi's goal which made it 3-0. As a result, Mbappé will steal the headlines from Di María, despite the Argentine claiming four assists.
THE STAT: 200
Icardi's second of the night which put PSG 3-0 up in Belgium was also the club's 200th goal in the Champions League.
