Nice for Sanogo, Valenciennes and Auxerre out
Argentine striker Gonzalo Bergessio starred for Saint-Etienne and Boubacar Sanogo opened his Les Verts account as they inflicted Nice's fifth defeat in a row to reach the Round of 16 of the League Cup. Valenciennes and Auxerre both fell to Ligue 2 opposition.
AS Saint-Etienne / OGC Nice : 4 - 1
Gonzalo Bergessio opened his Ligue 1 account with a goal in the Week 6 1-1 draw with Auxerre. The striker proved he has fully acclimatised to French football by adding two more against struggling Nice. Bergessio's 23rd minute opener came after Boubacar Sanogo's right-wing cross was deflected.
Bergessio scored his second 10 minutes from time. Ivorian international Sanogo's first goal since his summer move from Werder Bremen made it 2-0 five minutes later.
Midfielder Christophe Landrin scored the third with a neat finish. Loïc Rémy scored a late consolation for Nice.
FC Metz / Valenciennes FC : 2 - 0
Metz, 12th in Ligue 2, knocked out Ligue 1 outfit Valenciennes. Former Strasbourg player Pascal Johansen opened the scoring for Metz in the 63rd minute from the penalty spot after a David Ducourtioux handball. Cheikh Gueye added the second three minutes from time.
CS Sedan / AJ Auxerre : 3 - 1
Auxerre lost 3-1 at Sedan, Ligue 2's 16th placed club. On the hour Auxerre's Jean-Pascal Mignot equalised Alexis Allart's 10th minute opener. Damien Tiberi put the hosts back in front on 67 minutes and Yohann Lasimant scored his second League Cup goal of the season to put the seal on it in stoppage time.
Le Mans UC 72 / Nîmes Olympique : 3 - 0
Ligue 1 club Le Mans beat Ligue 2 side Nimes to end a run of three straight defeats in all competitions. Roland Lamah, Badar Sene and Modibo Maiga scored the home goals. Coach Paulo Duarte has made the League Cup one of his priorities. He said: "It's the quickest competition to win."
Montpellier HSC / RC Lens : 3 - 4
Montpellier contrived to lose to fellow Ligue 1 club Lens despite being 3-1 up when Karim Ait Fana scored in the 71st minute. Ex-Montpellier forward Toifilou Maoulida had headed Lens in front in the 4th minute. Grégory Lacombe scored twice before half-time to help Montpellier turn around in the lead.
After Ait Fana's goal Romain Sartre pulled one back for the visitors and Aboulrazak Boukari forced extra-time with a penalty two minutes from the end of normal time. Sartre made life hell for Montpellier with the winner in the 101st minute. Montpellier also conceded four times in last Saturday's 4-2 defeat to Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome in Ligue 1.
AS Nancy Lorraine / AS Monaco FC : 2 - 0
Nancy had beaten Monaco 4-0 when the two sides met at the Stade Marcel-Picot in Week 2. This time they settled for half the number of goals as Pablo Correa's Nancy recorded their first win since that day. Julien Féret scored Nancy's first in the 13th minute after Stéphane Ruffier pushed Paul Alo'o Efoulou's cross into his path. Issiar Dia scored the second inside the last ten minutes, beating Ruffier with an accomplished finish.>> Team Sheet
US Boulogne CO / Paris Saint-Germain : 0 - 1
Jean-Eudes Maurice scored the goal that separated the two Ligue 1 sides on the hour. Boulogne had several chances but could not beat veteran Grégory Coupet in the PSG goal. Midfielder Clement Chantôme hit the post for PSG late on.>> Team Sheet
Stade Rennais FC / FC Sochaux-Montbéliard : 2 - 1
Rennes came from behind to beat Sochaux. The visitors took the lead in the 68th minute with a delightfully struck Ryad Boudebouz free kick. Romain Danze equalised two minutes later and centre-half Kader Mangane scored the winner eight minutes from time, making it two in two games for the Senegalese after his Ligue 1 goal in Saturday's 4-0 win at Grenoble.
France's European contingent of Bordeaux, Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille and Guingamp will join the competition at the Round of 16 stage. The draw will be made on Friday September 25.
