Girondins de Bordeaux / Paris Saint-Germain : 1 - 0
In following last week’s comfortable 3-0 victory against Nancy with another win, Bordeaux also derailed the PSG bandwagon that had been gathering pace in the past week. Wins over Auxerre (last Saturday) and the 5-2 midweek thumping of Boulogne had propelled Paris to seventh in the table, but they were unable to record their first win at the Stade Chaban-Delmas since November 2005.
Bordeaux began in lively fashion with a Yoan Gouffran run requiring Apoula Edel in the PSG goal to spring into action on three minutes. Two minutes later Tremoulinas had the first shot of the night but it was cleared by the visitors.
It was Bordeaux in the opening few minutes, in particular with the quality of Trémoulinas’s crosses from the left, causing problems for the PSG defence although Edel, deputising for the injured Grégory Coupet, looked assured in the visitors’ goal.
That was until on 22 minutes when Plašil met another pin-point pass from Trémoulinas to bury the ball in the back of the Paris net to put the hosts 1-0 up.
What changed the complexion of the game was the substitution on 31 minutes of PSG leading-scorer Mevlut Erding. The ‘Turkish Tank’ limped off to be replaced by Jean-Eudes Maurice, and the 23-year-old immediately began to cause problems for Bordeaux with his blistering pace down the left flank. On 35 minutes Maurice left his marker for dead and shot centimetres wide of the Bordeaux goal.
In the second-half Bordeaux preferred to sit back and defend their slender advantage as PSG searched for the goal that would get them back in the game. Clément Chantome began to exert his influence on the right side of the pitch and with Maurice still causing problems on the left, the visitors almost drew level on 57 minutes when Maurice was denied by the timely intervention of Marc Planus.
However, on 77 minutes Bordeaux had the chance to put the game beyond the reach of PSG after a shocking mix-up in the visitors' defence, but somehow Yoann Gourcuff contrived to miss the easiest of chances.
Thus Bordeaux took the three points and upped the ante for their rivals, particularly Lyon, who play Lille on Sunday before next week’s mouthwatering clash with Les Girondins.
