Girondins de Bordeaux president Stéphane Martin announced on Friday that head coach Gustavo Poyet has been suspended 'with a view to an eventual sacking' following his outburst in a press conference on Thursday.

Bordeaux president Stéphane Martin announced on Friday that coach Gustavo Poyet has been suspended for a week following harsh criticism of the club in his pre-match press conference the previous evening. Thus the Uruguayan will not coach the team this week and will not be on the bench for the trip to face Garonne derby rivals Toulouse FC on Sunday (17:00 CET).

"This interview was the first step with a view to an eventual sacking. That said, we are now in a week-long period during which things can still change, so technically everything is still possible," declared Martin after meeting with Poyet, who has a week to consider his position ahead of another meeting with the club president. "The beginning of the transfer window marked the start of the tension and things have become poisonous, culminating in last night [Thursday's press conference]. I'm still surprised that such a virulent outburst would come following a win [Bordeaux qualified for the UEFA Europa League play-offs with a 5-2 aggregate win over Ukrainian side Fc Mariupol]. We cannot tolerate the use of such words about our institution. We took commensurate and appropriate action. After such declarations, it seemed very difficult for me to continue as if nothing had happened. I think it had to do with frustration concerning the transfer market, which we started slowly, and stress connected to the fact that we made no signings in July."

Poyet: 'Not happy'

Meanwhile, the Uruguayan, who had really let his directors have it after the win over Mariupol, left Bordeaux's Le Haillan training complex before the morning training session on Friday, the AFP reported. Poyet had been furious that Gaëtan Laborde had been sold to Montpellier - allegedly without his knowledge - and has threatened to quit the club: "I am not happy today; this is my worst day at the club. What the club did today with Gaëtan Laborde was shameful. I asked the club not to sell him until we had found a replacement, but the club failed to sign anyone and sold Laborde anyway."

Stéphane Martin announced that club physio Eric Bédouet - who took over as interim boss following last season's sacking of Jocelyn Gourvennec - would take charge of the senior team for the Ligue 1 Conforama Week 2 Garonne derby in Toulouse on Sunday.
