Choupo-Moting, Njie fire as Cameroon clinch AFCON ticket
PSG striker Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting and OM winger Clinton Njie both struck in Cameroon's 3-0 AFCON qualifying win over the Comoros - a victory that assured the Indomitable Lions of a chance to defend their continental title.
Choupo-Moting and Njie may be on different sides of the biggest divide in French football - the former playing for Paris Saint-Germain and the latter for arch-rivals Olympique de Marseille - but the two Ligue 1 Conforama stars were pulling in the same direction as they each struck to help Cameroon clinch qualification for AFCON 2019 in Egypt.
Although neither player took the field as the Indomitable Lions beat Egypt 21 to take the 2017 AFCON title, Choupo-Moting hit the opener (38') before substitute Njie rounded out the scoring late in the piece (90'). There was also a notable mention for Njie's ex-OM colleague André-Frank Zambo-Anguissa, who provided the assist Christian Bassogog to get the second.
Qualification is a coup for Cameroon, who were set to host the tournament until construction delays and security concerns near two of the host stadia led CAF to strip Cameroon of its right to host the tournament, awarding the tournament - which will be held in June and July with a new expanded 24-team format - to Egypt.
