Contout double downs Lille
Roy Contout scored both Auxerre's goals as they inflicted a first home defeat on Lille since the opening game of the season. Eden Hazard netted the Lille goal in a 2-1 loss with Les Bleus call-up Adil Rami at fault for Contout's second strike.
LOSC Lille Métropole / AJ Auxerre : 1 - 2
The kick-off was put back by two hours after stormy weather in northern France and the result leaves a cloud over Lille, who drop out of the top three for the first time since Week 17.
Second home deafeat
Lille’s only previous home loss in all competitions this season was 1-2 at home to Lorient in Week 1. Both sides were without their leading scorers with Lille’s Gervinho (knee) and Auxerre’s Ireneusz Jelen (back) ruled out of the game. Only bottom club Grenoble had scored fewer goals on their travels than Auxerre this season yet it was the Burgundy club who broke the deadlock on 19 minutes after a chance-free opening in difficult playing conditions.
Contout and Hazard exchange goals
Contout rose to meet Benoît Pedrett’s left-wing corner and powered the ball into the net. Ligue 1 entertainers Lille were unable to find their eyecatching style and were losing the midfield battle but they got themselves back on terms on 34 minutes. Florent Balmont and Yohan Cabaye were involved in a scrappy build-up as the ball ricocheted off an Auxerre defender and fell to Eden Hazard to slam home.
Ligue 1 top scorers Lille might have been expected to go on and close out the win with Auxerre having scored more than once on their travels only once this campaign. Yet before the break Jean-Pascal Mignot went closest for the visitors with a piledriver from long range. Hazard hit the bar for Lille.
Lille off the podium
After half-time a Ludovic Obraniak free kick and a Rami header were the best efforts Lille could summon before Contout scored again after a mistake from Rami, who hopes to win his first France cap in the friendly with European champions Spain at the Stade de France on Wednesday. Rami failed to deal with a long Mignot punt forward in the 73rd minute, allowing ex-Amiens attacker Contout to steal in and shoot between the legs of Lille goalkeeper Mickaël Landreau. Contout had just one Ligue 1 goal to his name prior to this game.
Despite Cabaye’s best efforts Lille failed to summon a second equaliser and drop off the podium. Auxerre remain sixth but boast a game in hand on several of the clubs above them in the table.
