Di Maria takes PSG joint top
Angel Di Maria scored the opening goal and Jesé added a late penalty as Paris Saint-Germain beat FC Nantes 2-0 on Saturday to move level on points with the Ligue 1 pacesetters.
Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 FC Nantes
PSG knew victory would take them level with OGC Nice - leaders ahead of Week 13 and who play AS Saint-Étienne on Sunday - and AS Monaco - leaders at kick-off following Friday's win at Lorient.
It took them just 13 minutes to make the breakthrough. Blaise Matuidi and Maxwell combined effectively down the left before the ball found its way to Jean-Kévin Augustin. The young striker, making his first start of the season, slipped a neat pass into Di Maria's path, and the Argentina international finished with aplomb to claim his first L1 goal of the season.
Augustin and Di Maria were both involved in the approach play that led to Lucas testing Rémy Riou (28') before Di Maria was forced off with injury (35'), but his replacement, Hatem ben Arfa, quickly got into the groove. He would have registered a fine assist to an Augustin goal, but the offside flag denied both a stats boost (38').
A miscued Thiago Silva header (43') and a cross-cum-shot by Yacine Bammou (45') stretched PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp in the closing stages of the half, but it was Riou who was forced into the first major save of the second period, thwarting Matuidi (54').
Riou was powerless when Matuidi sent a shot goalwards from the resulting corner, but was saved by a post. Nantes, however, were not able to capitalise on their fortune as René Girard's men suffered a third defeat in a four-game winless run that was sealed by Jesé's penalty in added time - his first PSG goal - after Diego Carlos had handled.
THE PLAYER: Jean-Kévin Augustin
The 19-year-old the line well in only his 18 league appearance for PSG.
THE STAT: 60
The victory was PSG's 60th in their last 76 home games in Ligue 1 - they have lost just two of those matches.
