Early birds Bordeaux catch Metz cold
Jimmy Briand was the scorer of one of an early pair of goals that gave Girondins de Bordeaux a 2-0 win at home to FC Metz on Saturday.
Girondins de Bordeaux 2-0 FC Metz
Bordeaux came into the game unbeaten in three and showing signs they are starting to get to grips with what Paulo Sousa wants from them. They quickly confirmed those suspicions as they struck twice in two minutes.
When Alexandre Oukidja parried an Enock Kwateng shot, Jimmy Briand brilliantly volleyed home (7') before Nicolas De Préville latched onto a Hwang Ui-Jo through ball before drilling a shot past Oukidja (9') as Les Girondins roared into the game. The finish was all the more impressive from the former LOSC Lille man as he had seen Oukidja deny him in a similar scenario just minutes earlier (6').
With Laurent Koscielny bringing much-needed assurance to the hosts' defence, they comfortably held Metz at arm's length as the visitors looked like a side that had won just one of its last 12 away matches in the top flight.
Samuel Kalu tested Oukidja early in the second half (54') while Habib Diallo did the same to Benoît Costil at the opposite end (69'). Kalu then had two opportunities to add a third, but the Nigeria international saw his rising drive graze the bar (75') before he screwed a shot unhappily wide (77'). Fortunately, his teammates had already done enough.
THE PLAYER: Hwang Ui-Jo
The South Korea international was playing only his fifth Ligue 1 Conforama game following his summer move from Japanese club Gamba Osaka, but already looks to be on the same wavelength as his Bordeaux teammates.
THE STAT: 1
This was Bordeaux's first home win in five attempts, and their first clean sheet in that series too.
