Montpellier booked a Europa League spot with a 3-1 win at the Parc des Princes, with Geoffrey Dernis netting twice at the Parc des Princes.

  Paris Saint-Germain / Montpellier Hérault SC : 1 - 3

OM’s League Cup-Ligue 1 double meant fifth place would be enough for European football and with Bordeaux beaten at Lens on the final day of the season even a defeat would have meant René Girard’s Montpellier qualifying for Europe after a fabulous season for the newly-promoted club.

A quarter of an hour in Montpellier took the lead. It was on the counter-attack after a Christophe Jallet corner for PSG. Senegalese forward Souleymane Camara carried the ball the length of the pitch and played in Dernis, who took it first-time right-footed and scored a superb goal in the corner of Grégory Coupet’s net. It meant Montpellier turned around at the break with a deserved half-time lead despite the best efforts of Mevlut Erding and Guillaume Hoarau for PSG.

Ninety seconds into the second half came the second goal, Younes Belhanda played the ball to Lilian Compan who beat Coupet with powerfully struck shot at the near post. And Montpellier were achieving all of this without a clutch of injured and suspended players.

Dernis, who has been short of first-team football this season such has been the competition for places, was enjoying his night. The former Saint-Etienne midfielder finished off a marvellous team move on 57 minutes. Garry Bocaly, Camara and Belhanda were involved before Dernis slid a left-footed shot across Coupet.

15 minutes from time the referee Monsieur Coué took the decision to suspend the match after flares were thrown on to the field from one of the stands behind the goal populated by Paris Saint-Germain supporters. Immediately upon the restart after a brief delay PSG top scorer Mevlut Erding scored. The Turkish international striker laid the ball off to Ludovic Giuly and continued his run to meet the cross with a header that was impossible to keep out for Geoffrey Jourdren. It was Erding’s 15th of the season in Ligue 1 for the French Cup winners.
