Lyon get back on track
Olympique Lyonnais got back to winning ways on Saturday, beating OGC Nice 2-1 despite playing most of the match at the Groupama Stadium with 10 men.
Olympique Lyonnais 2 - 1 OGC Nice
Lyon were in total control here as they found themselves 2-0 up before the half-hour mark. They went in front 10 minutes in when Dante intercepted a Martin Terrier pass only to play the ball straight into the path of Jeff Reine-Adélaïde on the edge of the area. The former Angers SCO player picked his spot with a low strike into the bottom-left corner of the net for his first Ligue 1 Conforama goal for his new club.
Rudi Garcia's side then doubled their lead when Moussa Dembélé sent Walter Benítez the wrong way from the penalty spot in the 28th minute. Dembélé had won the spot-kick, going down under a Christophe Hérelle challenge after a misplaced Stanley Nsoki pass had allowed the home side to break forward quickly.
At that point OL looked set for a handsome victory. However, Nice were given hope when the home side were reduced to 10 men in the 34th minute, Fernando Marçal being shown a straight red card for catching Hicham Boudaoui on the side of the head with a high boot.
Dolberg pulls one back
Garcia responded to that by removing Reine-Adélaïde and sending on a new left-back in Youssouf Koné. And, after smoke from flares set off at one end of the ground delayed the start of the second half, Nice did not manage to get a goal back until 12 minutes from time when Kasper Dolberg got in front of Joachim Andersen to turn in Patrick Burner's cross from the right.
However, Nice could not find an equaliser, and they ended the game with 10 men too as Burner was sent off for a second yellow card for a foul on Dembélé with four minutes remaining.
It is a sixth straight away defeat in all competitions for Nice, and Lyon move above Patrick Vieira's side in the table with this win. Garcia will be delighted at seeing his side get back on track after their defeat by Olympique de Marseille in the Olympico a fortnight ago. This was their fourth win in five outings and was achieved without skipper Memphis Depay and Houssem Aouar.
THE PLAYER: Jeff Reine-Adélaïde
The 21-year-old set Lyon on their way to a welcome three points with the opening goal, his first since a big-money move from Angers in August. However, he was then the victim of coach Rudi Garcia’s tactical reorganisation after the sending-off of Fernando Marçal, leaving the field before half-time. It means he has still not completed a full 90 minutes in a Lyon shirt.
THE STAT: 21
Moussa Dembélé's goal was his 21st Ligue 1 Conforama goal of 2019, his 10th this season. Only Kylian Mbappé of Paris Saint-Germain (25) has scored more in the calendar year.
