Mean Nantes keep run going
Andrei Girotto's stunning strike allowed FC Nantes to beat SM Caen 1-0 at the Stade de la Beaujoire and continue their unbeaten run.
FC Nantes 1 - 0 SM Caen
These two teams came into Week 6 in good form but they did not serve up a thriller, with Caen's Jan Repas producing the only attempt on target in the first half. Things did not get much better in the second half until a moment of magic saw Nantes take the lead.
Girotto, the 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder signed last month from Chapecoense, collected the ball from Chidozie Awaziem 30 yards from goal and took a touch before sending in a fizzing low shot that bent its way into the net off the right-hand post, giving Rémy Vercoutre no chance (73').
It was Girotto's first goal in Ligue 1 Conforama and it proved enough for Les Canaris to take the points, although they could have won by a greater margin - Emiliano Sala saw his header strike the bar late on.
Nantes have won three and drawn one of their last four outings to climb into the top six, a point above Caen, who had won three in a row prior to this.
THE PLAYER: Andrei Girotto
Claudio Ranieri had intimated he was not entirely satisfied with the signings made by president Waldemar Kita in the summer window but he is making do with what he has at his disposal. Girotto was one of four new signings to start this game and, while not recruited to score goals, his strike was a truly memorable one and was worth three points.
THE STAT: 363
The number of minutes that have passed since Nantes last conceded a goal. That is just over six hours. Ranieri's side have kept four clean sheets in a row and that is why they are up to sixth despite scoring just three goals in six matches.
